Meaning evolves as we evolve.

The word “guru” is often translated as, “That which brings you from darkness to light.” And in the past it was often an embodied human teacher.

Now we often hear things like, “You are your own teacher,” and there’s less idolizing of teachers (who are human just like we are in all our messiness).

So this evolution of “being your own guru” is an improvement. AND we can take it a step further.

We live in a world of contrast - light and dark, up and down, pleasure and pain…that’s not going to change. And we suffer when we think one side of the coin is “good” and the other is “bad.”

So I like to define “guru” as “that which illuminates the interplay of dark and light.” It’s a definition that reminds us of our wholeness, and I believe this understanding will be helpful as humans evolve in consciousness.
