How We React to Fear

The fears I have are mostly emotional. I’m grateful I don’t have to be afraid of a wild animal attacking me, or that I won’t have enough food to eat.

My fears are more along the lines of…

*Am I worthy of love?

*What type of world will my children inherit?

*Do I have what it takes to meet the challenges of life?

But my nervous system reacts the same way to the fear of strong emotions as it does to actual threats to my life.

The natural, automatic, and instinctual reactions to fear accumulate and are stored as tension in the body, and the tension fools us into thinking we have a sense of control.

We can react to fear with the 5 F’s: fight, flight, freeze, fawn, or flop. And these reactions can become ingrained and habitual.

We can get stuck using them as coping strategies that shape every decision we make. They can become a way we move through the world no matter what the situation.

In May, Kundalini Yoga & Meditation classes will focus on practices to help us shift out of habitual nervous system responses (the 5 F’s).

This will allow us to welcome relaxation, balance, and presence. Life can be lived in harmony with the present, instead of through a lens of past fears.
