Honest Gratitude

Practicing gratitude is great… as long as you’re not using it as a weapon against yourself.

Gratitude can often be used as a way to bypass our pain and suffering. For example, “My computer crashed and I lost all my files…but I should be grateful because at least I have my health and a roof over my head.”

When we try to talk ourselves out of the challenges of our lives, it’s not only unkind and unhelpful for ourselves, but it cuts us off from being able to connect with other people when they are suffering. The circumstances and details of each persons’ challenges may be different… But as humans, we all know what it feels like to suffer. And the compassion we have for ourselves and for others can foster meaningful connection and ultimately lessen suffering for all.

The key is “BOTH/AND” consciousness instead if “BUT/OR” thinking. For example, holding space for BOTH having a horrible day at work, AND grateful to have a job. Recognizing our challenges with compassion, AND dividing our attention to include gratitude as well - without using gratitude to sugarcoat or bypass our pain.

It’s not easy. Without practice, our minds will default to BUT/OR consciousness. Yoga and inner work helps me cultivate BOTH/AND consciousness. And for that, I am grateful!
