When I was too young, I watched the movie Psycho. For YEARS I was scared in the shower - I would leave the curtain open, keep checking the bathroom, and leave large puddles of water on the floor. I felt fear in my body, long after it was of any use to me anymore.

Let’s face it - we don’t want to get rid of our fear entirely. The positive intent of fear is to keep us safe. Its helped human evolution for countless generations.

And let’s also face it - often we feel fear in situations where it’s not adaptive. Like the fear I felt in the shower for years. Emotions are energy - and when they get stuck in our bodies, our emotions can have us reacting to a present-moment situation from a past experience.

But it doesn’t work to just tell ourselves not to be afraid. My rational mind didn’t really think someone was going to stab me in the shower. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Fear is associated with the element of Water, and the Kidney and Bladder Meridians. Opening these Meridians helps the Fear to move and release (and not be stuck). No more puddles on the bathroom floor.
